Tekla modeling of precast sandwich panels with brick detailing for a 7-storey residential building in Belgium

About the Project

Pan Gulf Technologies Limited delivered comprehensive precast detailing and modeling for sandwich panels in a 7-storey mixed-use building in Belgium. The structure includes ground-floor shops and restaurants, topped by residential flats with prefabricated balconies. The project involved a massive 50,000 tons of precast concrete and 650,000 bricks.

Client Overview

The client required a precast detailing partner that could replicate their existing shop drawing presentation style while managing a complex build involving heavy brick placement and high-volume panel modeling.

Scope of Work

Precast detailing and modeling of sandwich panels using Tekla. 3D modeling of concrete, rebar, fixing, embeds, and brick components. Shop drawing deliverables included unit drawings, reinforced concrete (RC) drawings, MEP details, and brick-specific details.

Key Challenges

The client expected drawing output to match the speed and presentation of their existing software—even though Tekla required different approaches. Each wall unit contained over 1,000 bricks, making the modeling process highly time-intensive. The models had numerous cuts and components per unit, leading to slow saving, opening, and sharing of the model. Architect-provided brick arrangement IFC files were excessively heavy.

Solutions Delivered

Deployed a resource onsite at the client’s office in Belgium to align standards and streamline the schedule collaboratively. Developed a custom brick-placement component to halve modeling effort. Opted for minimal cuts—using part cuts instead of line or polygon cuts wherever applicable. Requested the architect to provide brick IFC files in segmented parts to reduce file weight and improve performance

Software Used

Tekla Structures: Precise 3D modeling of sandwich panels, rebar, embeds, and brick components.

Results Achieved

Enhanced modeling efficiency and deliverable accuracy. Reduced time and complexity in handling large assemblies through iterative performance improvements. Delivered high-quality shop drawings and modeling outputs that aligned with the client’s presentation expectations.
