Smart Plant Data Through P&ID Digitalization
Pan Gulf Technologies Limited collaborated with a leading India-based specialty chemical manufacturer to execute a digital transformation and capacity expansion program that increased production capacity from 120 KTPA to 180 KTPA. To support this scale-up and enable more sustainable industrial operations, our team transformed legacy engineering documentation into a digitally integrated, asset-centric information system by implementing approximately 130 intelligent P&IDs covering more than 15,000 tagged assets.
By converting paper-based and non-intelligent engineering records into a high-fidelity, data-driven digital environment, we established a centralized “single source of truth” for engineering and operational data. This digital foundation enhanced operational efficiency, improved asset visibility, and streamlined maintenance and reliability workflows across the facility. The resulting lifecycle-ready infrastructure bridges the gap between legacy operations and modern digitally integrated manufacturing standards while supporting long-term operational scalability and plant performance.
Scope of Work:
- Review and assess all existing engineering documentation provided by the client, including legacy drawings, PDFs, and native CAD files.
- Configure and customize the project environment within the engineering platform by developing client-specific symbol libraries, legend sheets, templates, and standards aligned with existing plant engineering practices.
- Migrate legacy engineering data from PDF and native CAD formats into intelligent, data-driven P&IDs, ensuring accurate capture and structuring of critical asset and process information required for engineering, operations, and maintenance activities.
- Develop and implement a standardized tagging philosophy across more than 15,000 tagged assets, while synchronizing Piping Material Specifications (PMS) with intelligent P&IDs to support consistency and enable seamless integration with downstream 3D modeling workflows.
- Configure the system to enable accurate extraction and generation of key engineering deliverables, including Line Lists, Valve Lists, Instrument Lists, and Special Part Lists.
Intelligent P&ID’s:
Challenges Faced:
- Inconsistent and Incomplete Legacy Documentation
Legacy engineering documents often exist in multiple formats, including scanned PDFs, outdated CAD files, and manually marked-up drawings. Inconsistencies between documents, missing revisions, and undocumented field modifications can create significant challenges during data migration and validation of intelligent P&IDs. - Standardization of Tagging and Engineering Data
Establishing a unified tagging philosophy across 15,000+ assets requires alignment between engineering disciplines, operations teams, and existing plant standards. Variations in naming conventions, duplicate tags, and non-standard asset classifications can impact data integrity and downstream integration with maintenance and 3D modeling systems. - Ensuring Data Accuracy During Digital Transformation
Converting non-intelligent engineering records into a structured, data-driven environment demands rigorous quality control and validation processes. Maintaining accuracy in line connectivity, instrumentation details, piping specifications, and asset metadata is critical to ensuring reliable engineering deliverables and avoiding operational risks during plant expansion and future lifecycle management.
