Scan to 3D - Cement Plant Manufacturer Project Overview:

Pan Gulf Technologies Limited partnered with a leading global cement manufacturer to deliver the digital modernization of its 1.5 MMTPA cement production facility through a comprehensive brownfield engineering initiative. Pan Gulf Technologies Limited executed advanced Scan to 3D Cement Plant modeling to accurately capture existing plant conditions and develop a dimensionally accurate 3D model of the facility. The objective of the project was to transform the plant’s legacy infrastructure into a high-fidelity, metadata-enriched digital twin capable of supporting enhanced operational efficiency, streamlined maintenance activities, and future expansion requirements. To address the specialized needs of cement manufacturing, Pan Gulf Technologies Limited developed customized project configurations, including robust project-specific piping specifications and comprehensive component libraries aligned with industry and operational standards.

 

The project strongly emphasized brownfield engineering deliverables, including detailed plant layouts, piping isometrics, mechanical arrangement drawings, and structural steel drawings to support future expansion planning and plant modifications. As part of the Scan to 3D Cement Plant workflow, reality capture technologies were utilized to generate highly accurate digital representations of existing plant assets. By integrating intelligent P&IDs with precise 3D geometry, the team established a centralized asset-centric engineering database that improved cross-disciplinary coordination and engineering accuracy. The integrated digital framework also created a scalable foundation for future digital twin integration while optimizing ongoing Operations and Maintenance (O&M) activities through a unified digital thread.

Scope of Work:

  • Engineering Environment Configuration: Developed a customized engineering setup within Autodesk Plant 3D with project-specific piping specifications and component libraries to ensure standardized and efficient modeling workflows.
  • As-Built 3D Digital Reconstruction: Utilized Autodesk ReCap Pro and EdgeWise to convert high-density laser scan data into a dimensionally accurate, metadata-enriched Scan to 3D -Cement Plant Model of the brownfield facility.
  • Intelligent Schematic Integration: Established intelligent bidirectional links between the 3D model and P&IDs to create a centralized asset-centric database ensuring data consistency and traceability.
  • Interoperable Data Management & Coordination: Leveraged Autodesk Navisworks to enable multi-disciplinary coordination and deliver interoperable project outputs in NWD, IFC, and DWG formats with comprehensive consistency reporting.

Challenges Faced:

  • Geometric Complexity: Accurately modeling large and irregular cement plant equipment from point cloud data was challenging due to scan occlusions and congested plant areas.
  • Material Specification Alignment: Identifying and validating existing piping material specifications was difficult because legacy assets often lacked visible material identification.
  • Hazardous Area Scanning: Performing laser scanning in active high-temperature and restricted plant zones required careful safety and operational coordination.
